Strut your Stuff - Fashion

Haven’t gotten as many chances to go fall shopping as I had hoped but here’s what I bought so far: yellow peacoat from a little boutique in SoHo, leggings from everywhere (golden, turquoise, purple, black, etc.), a bunch of cardigans courtesy of H&M, a huge snakeskin bag from Express, silk Chanel scarf, plaid shirt dress from Urban Outfitters, skinny jeans from everywhere, basic tees, ruffled purple top, Zara snake pattern pants and some others. Still waiting for Top Shop. Hmm makeup bag: DiorShow mascara, ColourZone lip gloss (not sure if they sell it in the U.S.?), Burt’s Bee’s, Shu Uemura cleansing oil. I find that these cosmetics products work very well and I have been using them for a while now. I’ve checked and I am pretty sure none of them have mineral oil, which is a cheap product they put into a lot of cosmetics.

Fashion Week

posted by ying l.

So what did everybody think of New York Fashion Week? I was actually by Bryant Park the morning after and the huge tents were still up. Wish I could have been there. I didn’t have time to look at all of the collections but there were a few that I really liked. Rag & Bone seemed to be influenced by England, they seemed to have a sort of 1970’s punk feel to them and there was a bit prep school boyish style thrown in there. The line looked very comfortable though. Some of the clothes reminded me of YSL’s Le Smoking tuxedo. There was a lot of black and it was certainly very edgy. Rock & Republic had a lot of black and white, there were such sporty and alluring elements thrown in there. I loved the big gowns … they were definitely not your typical LBDs. One line that disappointed me a bit was Alexander Wang. It was alright, mostly light pastels, black, grey & white palettes. Everything seemed so uniform, not what I expected from him. So this whole fall fashion deal …. I am really loathing the fringe boot. It is like the Ugg trend all over again, ugh. I really like the whole intense Gothic look with the studs, Victorian style wardrobe, black lace, corsets and black velvet. No, not Hot Topic, haha. Well that’s all I have time for.

“You look at me”
“But I turn away”
“I just don’t know what to say”
“You smile at me”
“I don’t smile back”
“My happiness,is sealed in a safe pack”
“You speak to me”
“But I’m not listening”
“The tears in my eyes are glistening”
“You touch me”
“But I push you away”
“Today is not my day”
“You kiss me”
“But I wipe it off”
“I sneeze and I cough”
“You walk out the door”
“But I don’t care”
“I know now, that life is unfair”

Environmentalist Fashion

posted by ying l.

Okay, ever since Cargo’s Plant Love lipstick came out a while ago, the fashion & beauty industry has jumped into this enormous trend of trying to be eco-friendly. I, on the other hand, am hoping that this is not just a trend. It is sad that it has taken us this long to realize what we’ve been doing to our earth but better late than never (yes I am a closet dork, I was treasurer of my school’s environmental club).

On that note, a new magazine called Boho Magazine (http://bohomag.com/) was recently published and I noticed it at Barnes and Noble (I am estimating some time in mid August). I picked up a copy and it was actually pretty cute. The magazine is printed on 100% post consumer fiber. On some of the pages that display fashion & beauty products, there are eco-friendly ratings for them.

If you want to be earth friendly, consider looking for clothes that are made of 100% organic cotton, bamboo, recycled materials or hemp. Jeans dyed with vegetable dyes instead of nasty chemical dyes are great too (try J Brand’s Green Label). Also, I noticed the other week that many retail stores have picked up on really getting their customers into recycling their plastic bags. Some even have bins at the front door for them. Also, vintage shops are a great way to reduce waste and waste from manufacturing the actual clothes/accessories. Something I like to do when I find the time is re-creating new clothes from old clothes I find in the house. A few years ago when I first started sewing, I made a tube top from an old pajama dress that I hadn’t worn much when I was little.

I would suggest researching a company before purchasing their projects to see if their production is environmentally friendly. I know this might take up a little time, but don’t you want to know where your clothes came from? Or whether any animals were hurt in the process?
